RATIONALE: Quantitative techniques have become widely used in recent years for business analysis and as an aid in business decision-making processes. This course will provide students with the study of certain mathematical concepts and emphasizes their application to business and finance. It is a required course for some majors and a good elective for others.

PREREQUISITES: Mat 101 (College Algebra) or two years of high school algebra

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Students will review and apply algebraic techniques, apply and differentiate financial formulas, and apply basic matrix operations.

CLASS OUTLINE:

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES/TECHNIQUES: Instructional procedures include lecture, classroom discussion as well as in-class and online problem solving.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Text: Applied Mathematics for the Managerial, Life, and Social Sciences (Tan), 5th edition

Additional Materials: Webassign online homework account, a decent calculator and access to the internet.

INTERMEDIATE - POST ASSESSMENT: Your grade in this course will be determined by unit tests, daily homework, group projects and a final exam. Unit tests: There will be three unit tests given during the semester. The dates of these exams will be announced during class as the semester goes along.

Daily Homework and Group Projects: Most days, there will be homework assigned covering the course material. The student is expected to go online and complete the assigned homework by the designated deadline. Also several group projects may be assigned and graded.

Final Examination: There will be a comprehensive final examination given focusing more heavily on the final unit at the time specified by the college.

Course Grade: Your grade in this course will be computed weighting the three unit tests at 20% each, the daily grade at 10% and the final exam at 30%.

Grading Scale: A 90% - 100%, B 80% - 89%, C 70% - 79%, D 60% - 69%, F 0% - 59%

ATTENDANCE and MAKE - UP TESTS: Univerity policy states that any student who is absent for more than 25% of the class meetings, whether excused or unexcused, automatically receives a grade of F in the course. Students are expected to take tests on the day they are assigned. Make-up tests will be given only in the case of an extreme emergency, which should be made known to the instructor prior to the test. The responsibility for missed work rests entirely with the student. There are no makeups for missed quizzes.
