By independence, \(P(A \cap B) = P(A) \cdot P(B)\text{.}\) However, by mutually exclusivity, \(A \cap B = \emptyset \Rightarrow P(A \cap B) = 0\) gives

Hence, one or the other (or both) must be zero.
